Our disadvantaged youth suffer through lasting effects of unhealthy and unsafe environments because they have limited opportunities for a sustainable, successful future. Most of them come from lower-socioeconomic households, are aging out of foster care, are minority youths from socially or culturally deprived backgrounds, have come from broken or dysfunctional families, or live in high-crime environments. A disproportionate number of these young people are affected by intergenerational disadvantages - making the cycle hard to break.
“EVERYONE deserves a chance to realize their true potential”
Early disadvantage exposes these vulnerable group to higher risk of juvenile criminal offences, depression, substance abuse and even homelessness. It is quite difficult to outline the depths of this impact because there’s a varying range of contexts and because our young people are also susceptible to social influences from friends, family and the communities around them.
It takes commitment from governments, individuals and communities to tackle these issues at the grassroots level.
All young people deserve for someone to believe in them, create opportunities for them and give them hope, allowing them to explore possibilities. Individuals and communities in Australia are stepping up and creating programs that provide outlets and alternatives for social connections and self development. Most of these programs offer a variety of services ranging from social activities, mental & physical wellbeing, and even mentorship programs.
One such organization is Street Industries, an Australian grassroots organization that offers community-led initiatives, designed to help the local youth build their capacity through mentoring, life skills, leadership, and community development.
"Sometimes in life, we meet people that help us expand our horizons and introduce us to worlds we never would have known"
I had the absolute pleasure of meeting the CEO, founder and visionary behind this incredible organization - Samey Minkara. Samey turned his vision into reality, when he founded Street Industries in January, 2018 and continues to provide much needed support to Australia's disadvantaged youth, determined not to give up on them until they are back on their feet.
It is indisputable that Samey is a role model in the community - an activist, a gifted, compassionate and spirited individual with a big heart, and he shares his earnest and inspiring backstory.
We can, through collective community commitment, give back and help build a strong foundation that will have a big impact on the futures of our young Australians.
